"The Blessings of a Christian Home: Mother's Day Sermon"

Psalm 78:1-8 ESV Sunday, May 17, 2020
1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 5 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,
6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,
7 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;
8 and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.
Time and again in Scripture, God instructs His people to
TRAIN-UP the NEXT GENERATION.
One of the Greatest Gifts that a Mother can give to her Children is that of Her Unconditional Love and the HERITAGE of a CHRISTIAN FAITH and HOME.
For it only takes One Generation to lose our Spiritual Heritage and Satan knows this....
that's why his number object is to steal from us our Next Generation: our Children.
In John 10:10 Jesus stated The thief [Satan]comes only to steal and kill and destroy but that he came that we might have life and have it abundantly.
What does Satan want to steal, kill, and destroy most of all?
Our Salvation and Our Spiritual Heritage, as to who we are and whose we are.
--The Heritage of our Faith is a Living Faith-- passed from Generation to Generation:
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, to the Whole Nation of Israel, to You and I today.
A Truth that we see conveyed in Joshua 4... where God parted the waters of the
Jordan River and the Children of Israel were able to cross over at Flood Time.... into the Promised Land....and God instructed Joshua to take twelve stones from the riverbed to
Build A Memorial. but what was the memorial for?
Joshua 4:22–24 “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”
The stones were to remind the Israelites that they were to Teach the Next Generation
about the One True God whose name was Yahweh. They were instructed to pass along the
Heritage of their Faith unto God to the next generation: their children.
Perhaps the one of saddest passage of scripture is found in
Judges 2:10–12, And all that generation – all who entered into the [Promise Land] also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel. 11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them.
What do you see here? That it only took ONE GENERATION after the
Children of Israel entered into the Promised Land for them to LOSE their Spiritual Heritage and
begin to FOLLOW AFTER and Worship False Gods!
What Happened? Deut. 6:6–7 gives us the answer: “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
They had failed to PASS ON to their Children, the next Generation their Faith and Spiritual Heritage. And unless we too take serious God’s Command and Instruction to Pass Along our Faith and Spiritual Heritage, then our children too, will be lost to the Spirit of the Age.
Remember Paul's warning to Timothy and to the Church at Ephesus in 2 Tim. 4:2-4? 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Is There Any Doubt That We Are Not Already There?
If we are going to Reclaim our Spiritual Vitality, then we must reclaim our Faith and Spiritual Heritage through the Truths Proclaimed by Asaph In Psalm 78 written to a people who had
Forgotten The Instruction Of Their Fathers, Forsaken The Heritage Of Their Past
and Embraced The Spirit Of The Age.
As a result, they had LOST their Moral Compass, EMBRACED Moral Relativism and
REJECTED The Biblical Standard Of Truth / Right And Wrong.
Sounds A Lot Like Today Doesn't It
And so here in Psalm 78 God gives to us Three Divine Mandates as to
How to Reclaim our Spiritual Heritage.
1. We Must Listen v 1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! Literally “We are to Listen.... Jesus said, He who hath ears, let him hear.”
For God has a message for each of us this morning... and that message is that we are to take seriously our responsibility for the Spiritual Development Of Our Children -- the next Generation
Why is it, that if we care so much for our children’s the Physical, Emotional and Psychological Well-Being but we neglect their Spiritual Well-Being?
God command and instruction is that we are to Listen to His Teaching – to His Words of Truth with Understanding – so that we can pass along to our Children what God has taught us.
2. Give Instruction vvs 2-3 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings [hidden things] from of old, 3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us..
He is going to speak to them in a parable – the Hidden truths of God form old –
the story of their Faith and Spiritual Heritage.... about the how that mighty hand of God had worked in and through the events of history to bring about the Salvation of His people. Salvation History
Remember how we used to sing.... Tell me the story of Jesus, Write on my heart every word......
Tell me the story of Jesus sweetest, I've ever heard.
Isn’t it time that we, as parents, begin to tell the story of Jesus to our children
and write on our hearts every word.
· In Asaph’s time Fathers were the storytellers of the family. They were given the responsibility of passing down the Oral Traditions of the faith.
· Yet what we find in this psalm is that – THE HIDDEN THINGS – Oral Traditions had been lost.
They had raised a Generation of Children who had not only forgotten the stories
of their Faith and Heritage…they had forgotten God himself.
As a result, they had raised a generation of DISOBEDIENT and MORALLY BANKRUPT CHILDREN. – Sound Familiar?
In Verses 4 & 5 God Gives to us Both a Warning and Command – vvs 4 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. 5 For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children. [NLT]
v God’s Warning: be careful “not to hide God and the truth of His Word from your Children” Deut. 4.9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—
How do you hide God from the lives of your children?
1. By Not Taking Responsibility For The Faith Of Your Children. Some parents say today, we do not want to force our religion on the children.
2. By Modeling False Alternatives. When we make earthly pursuits our life’s goal. We teach our children that happiness in life comes from buying the right things and having the right stuff.
3. By Not Speaking Of God. When you do not talk about God nor allow your children to enter into your experience of God– you are hiding the truth from them.
God’s Command: Be a Storyteller “we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.”
Be a Storyteller. Open God’s Word and page-by-page reveal the mysteries and wonders of our God. “To open the eyes of the next generation to the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.”
Exodus 13:8 You shall tell your son on that day,
‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’
It is God's Divine Imperative that You Teach Your Children About God. 5 He decreed statutes [law] for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which HE COMMANDED our ancestors to teach their children, You are Teach And To Model For Your Children The Word of God as You live it out in your life.
3. Convey The Truth: vvs 6-8 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. 7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. 8 They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
In these verses God give us Three Commands that we are to live out before our children,
1. The First Command: The Transfer Of Truth. Verse 7b arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God but keep his commandments.
It is not the responsibility of the church. As a church our goal is to assist you, but not to do the work for you. Parents your goal is to Transfer Truth – truth that will capture the hearts and minds of your children for God.
2. The Second Command: The Encouragement Of Faith. To inspire the Hope of Salvation in the heart of your child, Verse 7a “ Then they would put their trust in God, and would not forget his deeds,” The reason we teach our children is that one day they may place their faith in Jesus Christ.
3. The Third Command: To Inspire Your Children To Obedience. Verse 7c “but would keep his commands.” Verse 8 They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
It is God's divine plan that we pass along the Heritage of Faith: Generation to Generation as we Tell the story of Jesus.... Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, to the Whole Nation of Israel,
to You and I today.
Tell me the story of Jesus, Write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story of Jesus sweetest, I've ever heard.
Isn’t time that we begin to tell the story of Jesus...... and write on our hearts every word.
How do you do that? In 2 Thess. 2:15 Paul tells “stand firm and
hold to the Traditions which you were taught.”
For when the Child of God Loves the Word of God, and Sees the Son of God,
he is Changed by the Spirit of God, into the Image of God,
for the Glory of God because he has found
the Truth of God.
Ad Dei Gloriam
“To God be the Glory!”
